The bold studio product shot has been a staple in the industry for years now, mainly used in the commercial world for ads. It's a shot that has no distractions, a very minimal set-design and a hero angle to make the product pop. It sounds like an easy one - no props? block colour backgrounds? To the untrained eye, a minimalist setup can seem simple to create, but to really nail the shot there are some vital elements you need to perfect. Using our work for subscription client SHO as an example, we'll give you the tips you need!

Lighting, Lighting, Lighting!

We're talking studio lighting - in this particular instance we're using hard light. One direct bare bulb from the left at full power and then a soft light or bounce to the right to fill those shadows. Hard light really helps emphasise those details and that bright, colourful vibe!

Colour

Choosing a colour combo is such an integral part of the making the image work. Using tones that work within the product's colour palette can deliver a pleasing result. The use of a colour wheel or combination inspired by designers can aid the process.

Mood

There are many guidelines you can follow, however there's no one size fits all guide as every product is different. The product itself will dictate the type of lighting, colours used and the mood portrayed. Research into the brand and communication with the client is super useful, it helps streamline the brief and sets the shoot up to be successful. Things to consider are the company values (the do's and don't's), the brand message, target audience and what is to be communicated through the specific campaign.
